Our story

Why I started Sattika

A letter from Geena

The weave is made by many hands. The story is written by the woman who wears it.

Some passions stay with us for a lifetime. Mine has always been the saree.

Ever since I was a little girl I have been fascinated by them. To me a saree has never been just six yards of fabric. I loved the quiet joy of bringing a new one home. Unfolding it for the first time, feeling its texture, looking closely at the weave, imagining the day I would wear it.

That feeling never left me.

Over the years I found that helping someone find the saree that was right for her made me as happy as finding one for myself. At this stage of my life I chose to follow that, and what had been a lifelong passion became my work.

That is how Sattika by Geena began.

What I found on the road

I went looking for weaves, and I found something else as well.

Behind every saree is a weaver whose skill took decades to build. Some spend weeks on a single piece, some spend months. Many still struggle to earn what that work is worth. Their children take other jobs, and every generation another loom goes quiet.

One master weaver told me the saree on his loom takes him close to a month. He is among the last in his region who still weaves it.

Today, when I hold a saree, I no longer see only colour and fabric. I see the hours. I see skill that was handed to someone and kept.

What we carry

We carry Kanjivaram, Banarasi, Chanderi, Organza, Tussar and Linen. Some are handloom and some are powerloom. Every saree says which on its own page, because that is the fact that changes what it is worth.

I know one brand cannot preserve every weave. But if each saree we sell keeps one more artisan at the loom, or brings one more woman to choose something made with care, then we are going the right way.

The name

Sattika

An old word for a woman's length of cloth.

I wanted a name with the saree already inside it.

A weaver Geena met while sourcing.

A saree is never only a garment.

It begins with the hands that weave it.

It comes alive with the woman who wears it.

The weave is our heritage. The story becomes yours.

Wear the weave. Own the story.

With love,

Geena
